Filtration: Solid crystals are removed from the liquid slurry.

Washing: Removal of the remaining impurities with solvents.

Vacuum Drying: Removes all moisture from the finished product to give a pure dry powder.

The figures speak for themselves. The fewer steps involved, the fewer transfer points, less product loss and much cleaner audit trail. That audit trail is the entire reason for companies when they are going through Pfizer or DuPont supplier qualification audits.

Mechanical Features That Actually Matter

Not every agitated nutsche filter dryer manufacturer is equivalent. It's a capital piece of equipment that you're going to use for 10-20 years. Getting it wrong is expensive.  

1. Material of Construction

The vessel must match your chemistry. Most applications use stainless steel (316L), but for corrosive solvents or aggressive acids, you might need Hastelloy C-276. A reliable ANFD filter dryer manufacturer will give you both, and will guide you to choose the material according to your process conditions, not simply force you to choose the cheapest one.

2. Agitator Design

It is the agitator that is the very core of the system. A bi-directional agitator, which has the capability of both, smoothing (flattening the cake for better filtration) and ploughing (breaking up the cake for better drying), provides significantly more process control. The depth of the stroke is also important. It should match the amount of solids you are processing. As a golden rule, the maximum cake height should generally be equal to or less than the agitator's stroke range.

3. Filter Plate and Sealing

Most operational issues begin at the filter plate at the bottom. You want a robust, uniform filter medium with no bypass paths. Vessel seals, particularly the shaft seal, must hold vacuum tightly during extended drying cycles. If the seal leaks during vacuum drying, the batch is a failure.

4. Compliance Certifications

It's a starting point, not an afterthought, for pharmaceutical buyers. Your ANFD supplier should have certifications like ASME, CE, PED, ATEX and FDA/GMP compliance documentation. 5. Surface Finish

In order to enable appropriate cleaning and avoid microbial harboring, the internal surfaces should have a roughness of Ra ≤ 0.8 µm (or lower). Welds are completely smooth and have no crevices.

6. Documentation

All material certificates (3.1 certs as per EN 10204), calibration records and full traceability shall be provided for each major component (vessel, agitator, seals, instruments etc.).

7. Validation Support

The manufacturer should offer an IQ/OQ/PQ documentation package, FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) protocol and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) support. This is the paperwork that helps clear your equipment through the regulatory audits.

8. Cleaning Validation

CIP ring placement, spray coverage data, and rinse volume calculations need to be documented to demonstrate that cleaning procedures remove residual product to validated limits.

Moving Beyond the Dryer: The Role of a Conical Mixer

When your filtration unit is done with its cycle, you are left with a pile of clean and dry powder. However, your production line doesn't end there. In most plants, it is necessary to add fillers, stabilisers or colourants to that dry material before it can be pressed into tablets or added to the final bottles.

A conical mixer features a cone-shaped hopper with a large internal screw that orbits along the inner walls. It slowly scoops the powder from the lowest part of the cone and allows it to flow down through the middle.
