There are studies indicating that metal foreign objects (such as iron, zinc, chromium, copper, etc.) in the cathode materials of lithium batteries can penetrate the separator during cold extrusion, causing mechanical short circuits, or being oxidized into metal ions during charging and being transferred to the negative electrode of the battery, then forming dendrites on the negative electrode and piercing the separator, resulting in chemical short circuits, which leads to problems such as high self-discharge, capacity degradation, battery heating, and even fire and explosion.


The quality of lithium battery materials, especially the control of metal and magnetic foreign objects, is the key to the safety and has also become one of the core indicators of relevant production equipment. Optimize design: we improve the materials and structures in contact with materials from the design stage, and analyze the failure mechanism of metal foreign objects; based on the premise of not producing or introducing metal foreign objects, we classify the materials and design the structures that do not come into contact with the raw materials to reduce the cost;

 

The material is strictly in accordance with clients' requirements, using 316L stainless steel or surface sprayed PTFE, ECTFE, WC, ceramic powder and other materials. 304, 316L and other stainless steels are purchased from domestic leading companies such as Taiyuan Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. and Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., and re-inspected; PTFE and ECTFE are imported high-quality materials, being inspected as well;

 

Outsourced components such as electromagnetic valves, gas pipe joints, ball valves, bearings, etc. are selected from leading brands and follow strict requirement for contents of copper and zinc foreign objects. Material certification documents and testing reports shall be provided by suppliers;

 

In the manufacturing process, in addition to machining accuracy and assembly quality, it is also necessary to pay special attention to the treatment of cutting burrs, welding slag, roughness and defects of the contact surface with the material, as well as the detailed treatment of round hole chamfering, threaded holes, sharp edge rounding, weld surface, etc;

 

Provide specialized training for relevant staff to help them develop the sense of quality control in lithium battery material production. During welding, wear soft soled shoes and do not carry any metal objects such as keys. Wrap the welding gun and wire with cloth and handle with care. During assembly, pay attention to protecting the machining and contact surfaces and the on-site environment, and cleaning up residual metal objects worn;

 

The quality inspector should strictly control the process and record it. After the final inspection, the metal map should be drawn for use as the data and document support for material traceability;

 

Keep the assembly environment clean and orderly with good air circulation.

 

The above measures effectively control metal and magnetic foreign objects in the equipment.
